Description
The Thorlabs CFP5-980A is a compact polarization-maintaining (PM) pigtailed aspheric fiber collimator designed for operation at 980 nm.
The collimator combines a PM980-XP single-mode fiber with an aspheric lens in a compact stainless-steel housing. The fiber and lens are factory-aligned to produce a low-divergence free-space beam at the specified 980 nm alignment wavelength. The design provides a convenient interface between a polarization-maintaining fiber and a free-space optical system.
With an effective focal length of 4.66 mm and a lens numerical aperture of 0.53, the CFP5-980A provides efficient coupling between the fiber mode and the free-space beam. At the 980 nm design wavelength, the collimated output has a theoretical full-angle divergence of approximately 1.42 mrad, with a 1/e² beam diameter of 0.88 mm.
A key feature of the CFP5-980A is its polarization-maintaining fiber. The PM980-XP fiber is designed to preserve the polarization state of light, while the fiber's slow axis is mechanically aligned with the connector key and the reference markings on the collimator housing. This makes the device useful in systems where polarization orientation must be maintained and accurately aligned.
The collimator uses a broadband 650–1050 nm AR coating with average reflectance below 0.5%, providing good transmission over a broad wavelength range. However, the lowest beam divergence and specified collimation performance are achieved at the 980 nm alignment wavelength.
The CFP5-980A is supplied with 1 meter of PM980-XP fiber terminated with an FC/APC connector. The angled physical contact connector helps reduce optical back reflections, making it suitable for laser systems and other polarization-sensitive fiber-optic setups.
