Description

The Thorlabs IO-5-375-GLB is a Faraday rotator optic designed for 375 nm laser light. It uses the magneto-optic Faraday effect to rotate the polarization direction of light as it propagates through the optic.

Unlike conventional waveplates, Faraday rotation is non-reciprocal. This means that the polarization rotation produced by the optic occurs in the same direction for both forward- and backward-propagating light. This property is fundamental to the operation of a Faraday optical isolator.

When combined with appropriately oriented polarizers, a Faraday rotator can be used to allow light from a laser to propagate forward while strongly attenuating light that is reflected back toward the laser. This helps reduce problems caused by optical feedback, which can destabilize lasers or potentially damage sensitive laser sources.

The IO-5-375-GLB is specifically intended for 375 nm UV applications, making it suitable for laser systems where standard visible-wavelength Faraday rotators are not appropriate.

Because the component itself is a Faraday rotator rather than a complete optical isolator, additional polarization components and a suitable magnetic configuration may be required depending on the intended optical-isolation setup.
