Description
The Thorlabs IO-F-780 is a free-space Faraday optical isolator designed to provide effective protection for laser systems operating at 780 nm. Optical isolators are essential components in precision laser setups where unwanted reflections can destabilize a laser source, broaden the linewidth, increase noise, or cause mode hopping.
The isolator operates using the Faraday effect, a non-reciprocal polarization rotation phenomenon. Light traveling in the forward direction passes through the isolator with high transmission, while light reflected back toward the laser experiences an additional polarization rotation and is rejected by the internal polarizer. This prevents reflected light from re-entering the laser cavity.
The IO-F-780 is optimized for the 780 nm wavelength commonly used in Rubidium atomic transitions, laser cooling systems, quantum optics experiments, spectroscopy, and precision metrology applications.
With a minimum isolation of 35 dB and transmission greater than 90%, the isolator effectively suppresses back reflections while maintaining high optical throughput. The compact free-space configuration allows straightforward integration into optical tables and laser beam delivery systems.
Because the isolator is wavelength-specific, maximum performance is achieved near the design wavelength of 780 nm. Operation significantly away from this wavelength may reduce both transmission and isolation performance.
